Why SDS exists.

Every member who comes to us is somewhere on the same journey — leaving, returning, or reconnecting. Our story starts with that journey.

The beginning

A gap we kept hearing about

For years, Somalis living abroad who wanted to return home — or who were already back and trying to rebuild — ran into the same wall: no single place to turn to. Job leads were scattered across word of mouth. Legal questions went unanswered. Healthcare guidance depended on who you happened to know. Young people arriving from the diaspora had no structured way into local education or training.

Somali Diaspora Support was created to close that gap — not with another office you had to track down for every different problem, but with one membership that opens every door at once.

What we believe
A diaspora is not a distance — it's a connection waiting to be used. Our job is to make that connection practical: real services, real people, one membership.

How we've grown

From an idea to seven services

What began as informal support between community members has grown into a structured membership model, built alongside our partner SONSA.

Foundations

Listening first

Before building a single service, we spent time listening to returnees and diaspora members about what actually got in their way — employment, healthcare, legal status, schooling for their kids.

Partnership

Joining forces with SONSA

Partnering with SONSA gave SDS the local footing to turn those conversations into real services — Employment Assistance, Social Support, Health Services, Legal Aid, and more, all delivered on the ground in Mogadishu.

Expansion

Youth & digital programmes

As more young people from the diaspora arrived, we added Specialised Youth Training with local boarding school partnerships — and most recently, Digital Empowerment, free AI training built for the modern economy.

Today

One membership, seven services

Today, a single annual membership gives every diaspora member access to the full range of support — no matter which part of the journey they're on.

Looking ahead

Where we're headed next

Every membership fee and every donation goes directly back into expanding these services and reaching more of the diaspora — more cities, more partnerships, more programmes built around what members tell us they need next.

Somali Diaspora Support is a proud partner of SONSA — working together to support Somalis returning home and rebuilding across the diaspora.
